Slavery in the Constitution
The Americans didn't think of Africans as equals, and considered them a source of labor only, which is why though the constitution stated that "all men are equal", it allowed slavery to continue. William Freehling believed that Africans had lower abilities than the whites and that no harmony would be obtained if black people live freely. The creators of the constitution had as a main goal the benefit of the overall American states, not all the people that formed these states. The slaves strengthen the economy of both the Northern and the Southern states, which is why the creators of the constitution decided to keep slavery.
